I've never written code before. Is this for me?

Yes. The first course, Learn Python, assumes you know nothing at all. It starts with your very first print() and builds up from there.

How much does it cost?

Pre-registering is free and so is the closed beta. We'll announce pricing for the full release before launch.

What do I need to play?

Just a modern browser. There's nothing to install, since your code runs in a sandbox inside the browser. The project courses use the free benkyu CLI, so you also learn to build on your own machine.

The closed beta is planned for 2026, and people who pre-registered get invited first.

What languages is it available in?

English, Japanese, and Chinese.

Terms of Service

These Terms of Service (the "Terms") set out the conditions for using Benkyu (the "Service") and the rights and obligations between the provider of the Service (the "Company") and its users (each a "User"). By using the Service, the User is deemed to have agreed to these Terms.

Article 1 (Description of the Service)

The Service is an online, gamified programming-learning platform. The Company may add, change, or discontinue features without prior notice to Users.

Article 2 (Accounts)

Users shall register with accurate information and manage their account information at their own responsibility.
The Company is not liable for any damage arising from unauthorized use of an account.
Persons under 13 years of age must use the Service with the consent of a parent or guardian.

Article 3 (Paid Plans and Billing)

The Service offers paid plans (such as Benkyu Pro). Prices and billing cycles are shown on the purchase page.
Payments are processed through the payment provider Stripe. Paid plans renew automatically for each contract period.
You may cancel at any time; after cancellation you may continue to use paid features until the end of the current billing period. Refunds are handled in accordance with the Notation based on the Specified Commercial Transactions Act.

Article 4 (In-game Currency and Items)

Currencies such as coins and gems and items such as cosmetics within the Service are virtual items earned through learning. They cannot be exchanged for cash, refunded, or given any real-world monetary value.

Article 5 (Prohibited Conduct)

Users must not engage in the following conduct:

Acts that violate laws, regulations, or public order and morals
Acts that interfere with the operation of the Service, or that involve unauthorized access, reverse engineering, or the like
Acts that defame other Users or third parties or infringe their rights
Using the Service for commercial purposes without the Company's permission

Article 6 (Intellectual Property Rights)

Intellectual property rights in the Service and its content (text, code, images, design, etc.) belong to the Company or its rightful owners. Rights to code and other content that a User posts on the Service belong to that User, but the Company may use it to the extent necessary to provide the Service.

Article 7 (Disclaimer)

The Service is provided "as is," without warranty of fitness for a particular purpose or of being free from interruptions or errors.
The Company is liable for damage arising from the use of, or inability to use, the Service only to the extent permitted by law.

Article 8 (Suspension and Withdrawal)

If a User violates these Terms, the Company may suspend or delete the account without prior notice. Users may withdraw at any time.

Article 9 (Changes to the Terms)

The Company may change these Terms as necessary. The revised Terms take effect when posted on this page.

Article 10 (Governing Law and Jurisdiction)

These Terms are governed by the laws of Japan. In the event of a dispute concerning the Service, the court having jurisdiction over the Company's location shall be the exclusive agreed court of first instance.
